This Encyclopaedia is being published for enabling the
world citizenry to acquire expert knowledge of
Bioinformatics. The contents and information has been
collected from different sources.

Introduction:
Bioinformatics is an
emerging discipline and has applications in frontline
areas of biotechnology like drug design, gene therapy,
diagnostics, crop improvement, biochemical process etc.
This multi-volume Encyclopaedia covers areas, such as,
computational genomics, molecular modelling, statistical
methods, computational techniques etc. State of the art
computer systems and software tools have been used to
explain different facets of Bioinformatics.
Special care has been taken to include areas starting
from the very concept of bioinformatics to structural
biology, computer programming, database management and
communication, quantitative techniques, computational
methods for sequence analysis, molecular imaging and
design, genetic engineering, drug discovery,
bio-spectroscopy, biophysical methods, cell and
molecular biology, human physiology and Immunology.
Bioinformatics has become a frontiline applied science
and is of vital importance to study new biology which is
widely recognized as the new scientific endeavour of the
twentyfirst century. The growth in full genomic
sequencing, structural genomics, proteomics, micro-array
etc. will be very slow without application of
bioinformatics.
Specifications:
The principal aim of
the bioinformatics programme is to ensure that India
emerges as a key international player in the field of
bioinformatics; enabling a greater access to wealth of
information created during the post-genomic era and
catalyse the country's attainment of lead position in
medical, agricultural, animal and environmental
biotechnology. Special care has been taken for providing
upto date information in this 8 Volume Encyclopaedia of
Bioinformatics by first discussing Bio-Programming
Languages with inputs of Computer Science, Object
Oriented Programming with C and Advanced Object Oriented
Programming; and then volumwise detailed description of
Genetics and Genetic Engineering; Statistical Methods
and Database Management System; Molecular Biology and
Biochemistry; Biotechnology and Industrial Microbiology;
Structural Bioinformatics including Proteins and Genome
Analysis; Bio-Computing Languages with Case Studies
PerlJava and BioJava; and Bioinformatics Software with a
view to preparing a competent cadre of young
professionals in the area of Bioinformatics.
